how it all started

Moving to Atlanta with a purpose back in 2012 was the most exciting experience as I finally left home in Oklahoma to start a new life here. I moved here to work for an airline that I love and that has allowed me to see the world. This was only my second big move, after moving all the way from Syria, my country of birth in 2001. I hope to visit soon but for now, I carry Syria and it’s beautiful people in my heart wherever I go.

From my last trip to Syria in 2010, right before the war broke out.

Speaking of heart, 2020 is when I fell in love with Atlanta. It taught me that color is beautiful and that it does exist. There was so much that I never knew or appreciated before the events of 2020 and for that I’m forever grateful. Atlanta has grounded me, allowed me to be more vulnerable and most importantly inspired the creation of The Flying Pepper Hot Sauce.

Taking some time off from work during the pandemic was a catalyst in bringing TFP to life. A labor of love and a fusion of cultures and flavors that had been a low and slow simmer in my head for quite some time now. I’ve always loved spicy food and hot sauce and this was my opportunity to bring something new and exciting to life. I think I did it but you’ll be the judge of that.

Tonga was named after the beautiful Polynesian island which inspired the original recipe for this sauce. Red-i was just a spin on redeye flights, a common term in the airline industry and probably the type of flight I’m going to be taking to Tonga very soon! There’s not much more to it!

First batch of Red-i in my kitchen in the Old 4th Ward of Atlanta.
